A Message from NALC’s New CEO, Jennifer Vaida
Literacy changed my life. It's the essence of why I'm here.
I grew up speaking Spanish. English came shortly after, and before long I was living in both languages. Watching what literacy did for my family, and for me, left a mark. It helped us belong, connect, and build a life here.
That stayed with me.
Like every human, I wanted to connect. I wanted to belong. I wanted to succeed. Literacy made all of that possible, opening doors to education and to opportunities I didn't even know were there.
The Nashville Adult Literacy Council is where my story and my purpose come together. I serve here not just as CEO, but also as a tutor. Working directly with learners keeps me close to why this mission matters, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Watching our learners grow reminds me that literacy is never just about skills. It's about being seen, heard, and understood. It transforms the experience of living.
I am overcome by the impact of our mission and humbled by our staff, volunteers, partners, and learners. You have helped create all kinds of opportunities through literacy.
Thank you for your dedication. You are changing lives.
As I reflect on my first quarter, I'm honored by the trust you place in NALC and committed to doing everything I can to uphold it. We'll be sharing updates along the way. In the meantime, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free email me directly at jvaida@nashvilleliteracy.org.
This is a remarkable place. I'm so glad to be here.
