We know many learners at NALC are eager to start reading and writing lessons, and many of you have been waiting for your chance to volunteer. We are excited to offer online and in-person literacy tutoring opportunities all year long!
Our one-on-one literacy program teaches adult learners how to read and write. Learners set their own goals based on their unique needs and what they want next in life. You will be helping make their hope a reality!
Our final Tutor Training for the year is scheduled for: Thursday, November 20th, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm via ZOOM.
Read a full description of our Literacy Tutor requirements here. All learners speak English and range from complete beginners (little to no literacy, kindergarten level) to more intermediate readers (middle - high school levels). Generally, tutoring includes weekly one-on-one meetings with a learner for an hour or two. Dates and times are determined based individual availability. Meetings can be over Zoom or in person at a convenient public space, like a library or coffee shop.
Lessons are learner driven, but may include any combination of:
phonics
grammar
vocabulary
reading comprehension
writing
editing
Tutoring requires a consistency from both learners and tutors. Tutors are asked to make a 12-week commitment. (Yes, vacations are allowed!)
Bring your patience and encouragement, and we will equip you with all the other training and tools you need! We will be here to support and guide you every step of the way.
